Multicultural Leadership Experience in the US

I am blessed and honored to celebrate 5 years UMOJA! When decided to volunteer in this organization, , I never could have imagined becoming its president. I have never seen myself as a leader and I confess that I was afraid and surprised (I had not applied) and when I learned that I was elected as President. I remember asking: "Are you sure? I’m African and I speak french you want me to be community leader in New York? "

“You are unanimously elected you are our MVP” (Most Valuable Person) they replied. I had to take the challenge, and it was a successful bet thanks to the support of my team and my superiors.

I wanted to extend a warm Thanks to my mentor Richard Cox and supervisor Tony Taylor who were able to detect my leadership potential; despite the fact that I was barely speaking English at the time, they were able to overcome appearances and cultural differences, helping me grow in the organization through the continuous acquisition of new skills.

Thanks also to our past president, Keisha Roberts, and Craig Himmons, my Vice President Eliza Gword, and all the team Laura, Armelle, Ofia, Howard, Charnae Benton, Sandy, Laura, Sophie, Uncle Ed, and the whole congregation for this mark of confidence. Special thanks to Dr. Reverend Jesse T. Williams Jr. for its inspiring motivation, and to Nicola Watkinson for taking time on her very busy schedule to support us.

For me, running a business was much more easier than collaborate and lead a multicultural team of diverse background in a foreign country, and I was not sure to be a good fit for this position. To make a long story short, I am the first African and Francophone member to hold this position in the organization and in the congregation. I am proud to represent UMOJA as a woman, African and Francophone.

I’ve learned a lot about leadership over the past 5 years with this team, consistency, persistence, listening, sharing and above all self-commitment. I have also learned that whatever your origins, if you act are guided by your heart, you will always be accepted. I keep learning ...

Je suis honorée de célébrer 5 années a UMOJA!

Lorsque j’ai décidé rejoindre l’association comme bénévole, je n’aurais jamais imaginé en devenir la présidente 4 ans plus tard. Je ne me suis jamais vu comme un leader et j’avoue que j’ai été effrayée et surprise lorsque j’ai appris mon élection, d’autant plus que je n’avais pas pose ma candidature.

Je me souviens avoir demandé : « Êtes-vous sûr? Moi une Je suis Franco-Africaine leader de communauté à New York ? " « Nous t’avons élue à l’unanimité », ont-ils répondu ; J’ai accepté de relever le défi.

Pari réussi grâce au soutien mes supérieurs et de mon équipe. Je remercie chaleureusement mon mentor Richard Cox le fondateur de l’association UMOJA, et mon superviseur Tony Taylor qui ont su détecter mon potentiel de leader; malgré mon anglais hésitant à l’époque, ils ont réussi a dépasser les apparences et nos différences, m'ont soutenue et aidée à grandir dans l’organisation grâce à l’acquisition continue de nouvelles compétences. Merci également à notre ancienne présidente, Keisha Roberts, et Craig Himmons, à ma Vice-présidente Eliza Gword, et à toute l’équipe Laura, d’Ofia, Howard, Charnae Benton, Sandy, Sophie, Uncle Ed et toute la congrégation pour cette marque de confiance. Un grand merci au révérend Jesse T. Williams pour m’avoir élevé, et à Nicola Watkinson d’avoir pris le temps de nous soutenir.

Mon experience

Pour moi, diriger une entreprise était plus facile que de collaborer et de diriger une équipe multiculturelle d’origines diverses, dans un pays étranger, et je n’étais pas sûr d’être le bon choix pour ce poste. Pour la petite histoire, je suis la premiere Africaine et Francophone à occuper ce type de poste au sein de l’organisation et de la congrégation. Je suis fière de représenter UMOJA en tant que femme, africaine et francophone.

Vous etes peut-etre un leader sans le savoir... En ce qui me concerne, j’ai beaucoup appris sur le leadership au cours des 5 dernières années avec cette équipe: cohérence, la persévérance, écoute, le partage et surtout engagement personnel sont les clés de la réussite. J’ai aussi appris que quelques soient vos origines, si vous agissez avec le cœur, vous serez toujours accepté.
